Six things to make with Beeswax

1. Solid Perfume

In a double boiler gently warm 1 tablespoon sweet almond oil and 1 tablespoon of beeswax until the beeswax is completely melted. Stir in 5-15 drops of your favourite essential oil or fragrance oil. Pour into a small container and seal once the perfume has completely cooled.

2. Furniture Polish

Old fashioned furniture polish is made by melting together mineral oil and beeswax. The mineral oil in the following recipe can be replace with fractionated coconut oil if preferred.

Over a low heat melt together 50g of oil (mineral or coconut) and 10g of beeswax. A few drops of lemon essential oil can be added. Stir until the mixture starts to thicken, but is still fluid enough than it can be poured into a small jar or tin. Seal when cold.

To use: apply to a wooden surface with a soft cloth. Allow the polish to dry for about 10 minutes then buff with a clean cloth.

3. Make a Simple Salve

4. Lip Balm

A simple balm can be made by melting 1 tablespoon of beeswax and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil over a low heat (this is best done in a double boiler or similar) When the wax and oil are fully melted add the contents of 1 vitamin E oil capsule. Pour into a small jar or tin and allow to cool before capping with a secure lid.

5. Cold Sore Treatment

Some studies indicate that lip balm made with lemon balm infused oil may help lessen the symptoms and reduce healing time for cold sores.

This simple recipe uses beeswax, cocoa butter and the herb lemon balm to make a healing balm.

In a small double boiler or microwave-proof jug slowly and gently heat 30mls of lemon balm infused oil (see below on how to make an infused oil) with 7g beeswax and 7g cocoa butter. Once melted add 3 drops each of tea tree essential oil and peppermint essential oil. Pour into a small, clean jar and allow to cool. Makes approximately 1/4 cup of balm.

Instructions for making an infused oil are here. Simply use dried or fresh lemon balm in place of calendula petals.

6. Olive Oil and Rosehip Night Cream

This Olive Oil and Rosehip Night Cream is excellent in drying cold weather that seems to pull all the moisture out of your skin. It also works well as an enriching day cream if you have particularly dry skin.

Banana Face Mask

This recipe is for a facial mask that is best suited to dry skin, but can be beneficial to most skin types.

Bananas are great for dry skin. They moisturise and promote collagen production.

Honey hydrates and soothes. It can help reduce inflammation and has ant-bacterial properties.

Lactic acid found in yoghurt is a natural exfoliant. Yoghurt can also help reduce the appearance of pores.

Eggs can help reduce the appearance of blemishes.

Kaolin Clay is a fine white clay that can purify and soften the skin.

Banana Mask

You will need:
  • 1 ripe banana - well mashed
  • 1 egg white - lightly whisked
  • 1 tablespoon natural or Greek yoghurt
  • 1 tablespoon liquid honey
  • 1 tablespoon kaolin (or white) clay
  • 1/2 teaspoon oil (rice bran, olive or jojoba can all be used)

Whisk together all the all ingredients (except the banana) until smooth and creamy. Add the banana and mix well. Massage into the skin. Leave for 10-15 mins then rinse with warm water and follow with your usual moisturiser.

If you don't have bananas or kaolin clay on hand you can try this simple two ingredient mask instead:

Honey Yoghurt Mask

Mix 1 tablespoon each of liquid honey and plain yoghurt. Apply to clean skin. Leave for 10 minutes then rinse with warm water.
